Aligarh, Aug. 15 -- Farmers in Aligarh and Mathura districts of Uttar Pradesh went on a rampage, blocking roads and setting vehicles ablaze on Sunday after two persons were killed in police firing on Saturday.
They were staging a demonstration to demand higher compensation for land acquired by the state government to build the Agra-Yamuna Expressway. A police official was also killed in the violence on Saturday.
"Nearly half-a-dozen people were injured in clash with the police on Sunday. We rushed police teams to the two affected districts," said Brij Lal, additional director general of police.
Following the violence, Aligarh District Magistrate Ram Mohan Rao, Senior Superintendent of Police (Aligarh) Vijay Prakash and Mathura Senior Superintendent of Police B D Paulson were transferred. The farmers have been holding demonstrations for nearly three weeks at Tappal, 60 km from Aligarh, demanding comp-ensation at the rate paid to Noida and Greater Noida farmers.
"The farmers in Noida and Greater Noida were paid Rs 880 per square foot, while farmers in Mathura and Aligarh were offered Rs 450 per square foot," said Anil Talan, spokesman of the Bharatiya Kisan Union. "This is not acceptable to farmers," he said.
