Commonwealth Games theme song unveiled
NEW DELHI: Within two hours of the song's release on Saturday, the AR Rahman composition for the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2010 had been downloaded more than 7,000 times. A hit? Definitely, as far as Suresh Kalmadi and the rest of the Organizing Committee (OC) is concerned.

When Rahman released the theme song — written, composed and sung by him, Kalmadi and the VIPs present must have heaved a sigh of relief — finally, something was going right.

The song is relatively slow paced, according to some comments from CWG-watchers on a social networking site where the song has been uploaded, but its emotional appeal is spot on. As Rahman croons ''Khelo, jeeyo, hey-o, let's go'', the rousing chorus takes the song forward, managing to convey all that the OC and Delhi government haven't so far, namely a sense of ownership of the Games.

Predictably, Rahman refused to say much about the song, except that he had been working on it for six months and was tweaking it till last night. He said he preferred the song, which is mostly in Hindi, to speak for itself. Free downloads are not officially available as officials said CDs of the song would be made available to sell, later.

Senior OC officials claimed the song, which will be put up on the Commonwealth Games 2010 website, will be available for sale in CD format. Free downloads are not officially available — a fact that seems to have escaped the notice of the Facebook page of CWG 2010, where downloads are easily available. Sources added that a compilation of different songs, composed by other musicians like Ranjit Barot and others, would be available as a single album, ''before the Commonwealth Games''.

The song release, which took place at the Kingdom of Dreams, owned by Wizcraft who are also the event organisers of the ceremonies for the Games, saw Kalmadi promise ''many medals'' for India in the Commonwealth Games. Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit, who had come with her family including son Sandeep Dikshit, was equally optimistic about the preparations, claiming all is well.
