The impasse over Mumbai's second international airport has been broken with civil aviation minister Praful Patel committing to environment minister Jairam Ramesh that the project would be scaled down if needed and plans altered to reduce the environmental impacts at the Navi Mumbai site. Indications are that the civil aviation ministry may agree to trim commercial add-ons—hotels, for instance—to secure the nod from the environment ministry which holds that the project in its current form poses a threat to mangroves and would entail diversion of two rivers.(TOI Photo)
